Senate clears the way for higher taxes
The Senate voted 26 to 23 to suspend I-960’s two-thirds requirement for tax hikes today.
In a victory for taxpayers, however, the Senate approved a striker amendment sponsored by Senator Hargrove that wiped out all of the proposed changes to I-960’s transparency provisions and new definition of tax increases in the original bill. For now, that means our Big Spender list will go on!
Senator Hargrove’s amendment also preserves the current requirement for advisory votes for tax increases not sent to voters first for approval. This means that every new tax passed by the legislature this year is going to be put directly in front of voters on the November ballot.
The suspension of the two-thirds requirement is only effective through the end of the current biennium (July 1, 2011).
